Practice datasets from real Indian industries

Download 10 free relational datasets for SQL practice, each with 4 or 5 linked tables, a data dictionary and starter queries. Every set comes as CSV files, an Excel workbook or a SQL script that loads in PostgreSQL, SQLite and MySQL 8. The data is synthetic and CC0-licensed, so you can use it anywhere without asking.

Relational datasets modelled on how Indian businesses and public services actually work: festival sale spikes, monsoon seasonality, UPI payments, financial years that start in April. Every set has linked tables, a data dictionary and starter queries. Download them free as CSV, Excel or a SQL script, or sign in and query them straight away.

  • Retail

    E-commerce orders & returns

    5 tables · 9,770 rows

An online marketplace selling across India: customers, a product catalogue, orders with line items, and the returns that follow. Order volume spikes in the Diwali and Republic Day sale weeks; fashion is returned far more often than groceries.

  • Finance

    UPI & digital payments

    5 tables · 6,465 rows

Person-to-person and person-to-merchant UPI payments: payer and payee banks, merchant categories, failures by reason, and the disputes raised afterwards. Most payments are small; a few large ones dominate value. Traffic spikes on salary days and festival weeks.

  • Operations

    Logistics shipments

    4 tables · 9,536 rows

A national courier network: warehouses in 24 hub cities, carriers, shipments with promised and actual delivery dates, and the scan events along the way. Late deliveries cluster in the monsoon months and in festival weeks, when volume peaks.

  • Analytics

    SaaS usage & churn

    5 tables · 7,804 rows

A business analytics product sold to Indian companies on monthly plans: accounts, subscriptions with upgrades and cancellations, feature usage events and support tickets. Accounts that stop using the product and open tickets are the ones that churn.

  • HR

    Payroll & compensation

    5 tables · 6,522 rows

Monthly payroll for a 900-person Indian company across two financial years: departments, salary bands, employees, payslips with the statutory deductions (PF, professional tax, TDS), and the annual bonus. Increments land every April; people who leave stop appearing on payroll.

  • Healthcare

    Hospital admissions

    4 tables · 6,280 rows

In-patient admissions across a network of 30 hospitals: specialties, doctors, patients, diagnoses, length of stay, billing and how each stay was paid for. Dengue and malaria admissions rise through the monsoon; government insurance covers a large share of bills.

  • Marketing

    Video streaming

    5 tables · 8,404 rows

An Indian OTT service: a catalogue of films and series in eight languages, subscribers on four plans, viewing sessions and ratings. Viewing is heavily concentrated on a few hit titles, peaks in the evening, and regional-language titles punch above their catalogue share.

  • Travel

    Airline bookings & delays

    4 tables · 7,032 rows

Domestic flights between 24 real Indian airports on eight fictional airlines: scheduled and actual departures, delays and their causes, and passenger bookings with fares. Fog delays pile up at northern airports in December and January; fares climb as departure approaches and around festivals.

  • Public Policy

    School education

    5 tables · 8,340 rows

Schools across 40 districts over three academic years: management type, infrastructure, teachers, enrolment by grade and gender, and board exam results. Enrolment thins out after grade 8; schools with more trained teachers and working toilets and libraries post better results.

  • Sports & Energy

    Renewable energy generation

    5 tables · 5,413 rows

Daily generation from 80 solar, wind and small-hydro plants in the states where those resources are strongest, with the tariffs they sell at and the outages that cut output. Solar dips in the monsoon while wind and hydro peak, which is why a mixed portfolio smooths supply.

Questions about the datasets

Can I use these SQL practice datasets for free?

Yes. Every dataset is free to download and released under the CC0-1.0 licence, so you can use, share and adapt it without asking. The data is synthetic: the places and calendars are real, while the people and businesses are fictional.

Which databases do the SQL scripts work with?

Each SQL script creates the tables and loads the rows in PostgreSQL, SQLite and MySQL 8. If you prefer another tool, use the CSV files, which come with a README, or the Excel workbook.

How do I practise SQL on these datasets without downloading anything?

Sign in to DataStride and open Studio. The same tables are ready to query in your browser, so there is nothing to install. Each dataset also has three starter queries to begin from.

Learn to query these tables step by step on DataStride, the SQL and Python learning platform by OranjeStride, or see DataStride for SOIL and DataStride for Rebounce.
